Observation: what a station recently measured
An observation is a value recorded by a monitoring station at a specific time. It may show discharge, gauge height, reservoir elevation, or another unit. Always pair the number with its station, timestamp, unit, and data source.
A recent observation is still not a measurement at every point on a river. Tributaries, diversions, travel time, rainfall, and station location can change how well it represents a particular put-in-to-take-out section.
Forecast: what a model predicts
A forecast estimates future conditions from weather, hydrology, operations, and other inputs. Its uncertainty generally grows farther into the future. New rain, snowmelt timing, model updates, and unplanned operations can move the result.
Read the issue time, forecast horizon, unit, location, and update cadence. When possible, compare the latest forecast with recent observations to see whether actual conditions are following the projected trend.
Release schedule: what an operator plans
A dam-release calendar describes planned operations, often for a defined window. It is not proof that a target flow has begun, reached the run, or remained unchanged. Delays, maintenance, weather, grid needs, emergency operations, and operator decisions can alter a schedule.
Confirm the schedule with the operator or official event source, then check downstream observations. Account for travel time between the release point, gauge, put-in, and take-out.
Build a timeline before you drive
- Identify the exact river section and the station or dam connected to it.
- Note the current observation and its timestamp.
- Review the forecast trend and when it was issued.
- Confirm the release window with the primary source.
- Estimate travel time and when usable water may arrive at the put-in.
- Choose a decision checkpoint and a backup plan if the signal changes.
River People events can keep planned releases beside crew logistics, while river detail views keep available condition context near the section. Treat every time in its stated time zone.
Watch for common interpretation errors
- Planned equals present: a calendar entry is mistaken for water already on the run.
- Peak equals duration: a maximum forecast value is treated as an all-day condition.
- Station equals section: a reading is applied without checking location and travel time.
- Fresh page equals fresh data: a webpage reload is confused with a new observation.
- One model equals certainty: uncertainty and later updates are ignored.
Before launching
Recheck the latest observation, weather, access, hazard reports, and operator notices. If the signal does not match what you see at the put-in, stop and reassess. Have a turnaround threshold and an alternate activity before the group is committed.
Useful language: "Observed at 9:15 a.m.," "forecast to rise this afternoon," and "release scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m." preserve the distinction between measured, predicted, and planned conditions.
